Dangerous Goods (DGR) & Prohibited Cargo
Ensure seamless customs clearance and safe global transit. Review Xpress Cargo’s strict adherence to IATA, IMDG, and ADR regulations regarding hazardous materials and restricted freight.
Regulatory Overview
Dangerous goods (DG) are articles or substances capable of posing a hazard to health, safety, property, or the environment. As a premier freight forwarder, Xpress Cargo strictly enforces international transport laws across air, ocean, and road freight.
Zero Tolerance for Undeclared Hazmat
Tendering undeclared or misdeclared hazardous cargo is a violation of international federal law. It will result in immediate cargo seizure by customs, severe civil penalties, and permanent termination of your forwarding contract.
Prohibited vs. Restricted Cargo
It is vital for shippers to classify their freight accurately. Understand the difference between embargoed items and items requiring special handling.
-
Strictly Prohibited (Embargoed)
Firearms & munitions, illegal narcotics, counterfeit goods, currency/bullion, and live animals (without specialized pet transport clearance). -
Restricted (Requires DG Docs)
Lithium-ion batteries (UN3480/UN3481), industrial chemicals, magnetized aviation parts, dry ice, and commercial pharmaceuticals.
The 9 UN Hazard Classes
If your commercial invoice includes goods falling into these UN classifications, you must supply a valid Material Safety Data Sheet (MSDS) and utilize UN-certified packaging.
Explosives
Ammunition, commercial explosives, detonators, and flares.
Gases
Compressed industrial gases, aerosols, and liquid nitrogen.
Flammable Liquids
Aviation fuels, industrial solvents, paints, and alcohols.
Flammable Solids
Alkali metals, sulfur powder, and self-reactive substances.
Oxidizers
Hydrogen peroxide, chemical fertilizers, and pool chlorine.
Toxic & Infectious
Agricultural pesticides, bio-medical samples, and cyanides.
Radioactive
Medical isotopes, uranium, and industrial density gauges.
Corrosives
Lead-acid batteries, sulfuric acid, and strong industrial bases.
Miscellaneous
Lithium batteries, dry ice, and heavy-duty industrial magnets.
Cargo Declaration Process
To prevent delays at the port of origin, shippers must complete the following 4-step compliance framework before tendering restricted freight.
Provide MSDS
Submit a recent Material Safety Data Sheet from the chemical manufacturer.
UN Packaging
Pack cargo in specialized UN-specification packaging tested for drop & pressure.
Affix DG Marks
Ensure correct IATA/IMDG hazard diamond labels are fully visible on outer cartons.
Submit DGD
Provide a formalized Shipper's Declaration for Dangerous Goods (DGD) form.
Cargo Visual Reference
Examples of standard commercial freight that require stringent DG profiling and specialized stowage.
Customs Interventions & Penalties
Failing to adhere to international logistics protocols will trigger immediate actions by the TSA, FAA, or local customs authorities.
- Customs Holds & Cargo Seizure at Origin/Destination
- Severe Demurrage, Storage, and Civil Carrier Fines (Up to $75,000)
- Suspension of Freight Forwarding Privileges & TSA Known Shipper Status
